What is IPL and how does it work?
Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL treatment for the skin using the photo rejuvenation process, represents a breakthrough in age-defying skin care. This new IPL treatment technique treats skin damage non-invasively, there is no disruption of the skin’s epidermal surface with our New York photo facial therapy. IPL treatment addresses the effects of photo aging and sun damage with low risk of complications and no recovery time.
The Palomar Icon® Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is the next generation in Photo Rejuvenation. This light based treatment reduces the appearance of discoloration, redness, sun damage, spots, and freckles to help both men and women restore a more clean, youthful look. Icon IPL treats sun damage and pigmented spots on areas on face, chest, and hands to effectively restore the skin’s youthful, natural glow.

The IPL laser is a non-ablative technique and delivers a high intensity pulse of a broadband spectrum of light that is very different from a laser. These pulses of light are applied and treated to directly affect the deeper parts of the skin. The results are quite remarkable from sun damaged, red freckly skin to clear, clean, smooth skin unmarked skin. IPL treatments are performed with different types of wavelengths, each of which is designed to target different structures in the skin. Overall there is a benefit to each and every one of these IPL treatments. New collagen is produced by skin exposed to IPL and as a result leads to the gradual improvement in the appearance and overall tightening of the skin.
IPL treatments usually last about 30-60 minutes depending on the area being treated and the degree of sun damage or photo aging. Patients can go back to their normal lifestyle and resume daily activities with no downtime. Most patients require approximately 3-4 treatments scheduled 1 month apart and must be cautious of prolonged sun exposure. As with any treatment, long lasting effects will vary upon proper maintenance.
